Where words go to die.

You All (Part 2)

Part 1

(Note, I’m ignoring ALL the BS here and just focusing on the ideas that started this a long long long long time ago.)

The big giant clusterfuck of a million hashtags.

Let’s all just go home. If someone does shit let’s just ignore it. The less attention we feed to the clusterfuck the less of a clusterfuck we’ll have.

Women in gaming.

Women aren’t represented in games. Why? Well this report says that a game with a female protagonist sells 75% less copies than one with a male lead or a choice. Only 24 out of 600+ games had a female lead. Less representation means less women want to make them. Hell only 18% of computer science course places are held by women. Why? Well that link says 90% of girls want to “help people” with their careers. A large part of this shit goes all the way back to the fundamentals of society but maybe, with a bit more representation, we can get that percentage up a bit.

Basically buy and make more games with female leads and we can get more women making games which means we get more awesome things like Portal (a game both lead by and staring women).

Corruption in games journalism.

Here’s the problem. Game websites get money from game publishers. This is the biggest problem and it’s gonna be tough to beat. As a YouTuber I’m damn lucky. I have no idea who is advertising on my channel. This means I have free-roam. If a game is shit I don’t have to look up who’s advertising on my channel that day. I can just stand up, pull down my pants and crap all over it.

Here’s the two biggest journalism ethical fuckups I can remember.

Jeff Gerstmann was fired from gamespot in 2008 for not giving Kayne and Lynch a good review when the site was covered in adverts for it.

Robert Florence was fired from eurogamer  in 2012 because he wrote a critique about games journalism.

Holy shit. Here we have two giant sites firing people for not sticking to a line. A line drawn by the companies these journalists are supposed to be writing about. Isn’t there supposed to be a freedom of the press?

Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed: everything else is public relations. - George Orwell

IGN, Kotaku, Gamespot, Eurogamer fucking all of them are just advertising. Advertising paid for by advertisers because we trust them more. That’s it. We need a new approach and I’d suggest YouTubers but god damn the advertisers beat me to it.

So now what? Two options. Find people who you can trust or, well, pay for it. Fuck the advertisers. Directly give journalists money through patreon etc. How can you trust that a journalist will cover a friends game accurately? Full disclosure. I like to make my biases as obvious as possible (I don’t like RPGs, I want Tim Schafer’s babies etc) but, again, it’s comes down to trust. Who do you trust to be honest so you can spend your money well?

My advice is to pick a small group of reviewers who you like and read everything. Don’t trust just one, go for an average and you’ll maybe come out with some actual information. Don’t pre-order, don’t watch pre-rendered trailers and maybe we can shape games back into a… nice shape? Damn, I was on such a roll there…

TL;DRI haven’t picked a side because it seems only the people flinging shit have.
